Norhtanger Abbey by Jane Austen!!

           Its been so long! But I'm back with a new review for all of you! it's another classic, Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen!

Summary:

Catherine is ready to see more of life than her family’s farm. When an opportunity to travel with family friends presents itself, she is thrilled to take it. While in Bath, Catherine meets Isabella. Isabella is smooth, confident, and beautiful...and engaged to Catherine’s brother. However, Isabella lacks the art of conversing over anything of substance unlike Ms. Tilney. Ms. Tilney is smart, beautiful, and excellent company. Catherine meets Ms. Tilney through Mr. Tilney, Ms. Tilney’s tall, good-looking brother. As they bond, Catherine’s friendship with Isabella becomes strained. When Catherine visits the Tilney’s at their home, Northanger Abbey, a discovery is made about Isabella and the Tilney family and shortly after Catherine is ejected from the house with no explanation as to why. What has Isabella done? Why was Catherine thrown out of Northanger Abbey? And What about Mr. Tilney? Catherine was hoping that something was blossoming between them…is all hope for that over now?

Review:

I really enjoyed Northanger Abbey. As you may know by now I am a big fan of Jane Austen and am slowly working my way through all 6 of her major novels. Northanger Abbey is definitely worth your time. There are twists and turns from beginning to end with every character that keep you guessing right down to the last page. This book that takes place in just over a year’s time is one of the most eventful year’s any young woman could live through. You don’t want to miss out on reading a day of it! I give Northanger Abbey 5 bookmarks and I hope that you will read it very soon!

Give a Shoutout to Your Favorite Bookstore!

     In cities all over America and all over the world there are bookstores. I'm not talking about chains like Books-A-Million or Barnes and Noble either! There are thousands of small, locally-owned bookstores in big cities and small towns that depend on word-of-mouth advertisement to keep their doors open.

    One of my personal Favorites is Hattie's Books. Hattie's is located in Historic Downtown Brunswick, Ga across from the Ritz Theater. It's a great place to find just what you're looking for! Hattie's sells every genre and their prices are fantastic! When I'm on vacation, I always like to stop by Hattie's Books to see what's new!

Just a Little Something Fun

    I know I've been M.I.A. the last couple of weeks, but I promise I haven't forgotten about you! I also haven't stopped reading! I recently finished Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen and I can't wait to share it with you all! But since I can't do that today I thought I'd share this instead! :

     Back in January, I had the rare pleasure of getting to meet an author! I was spending some time on the Georgia coast with my family looking in the shops and attending some art shows, when I happened upon a book signing at my favorite locally owned bookshop Hattie's Books! The author was none other than 3 time Author of the Year, Pamela Bauer Mueller! I stopped and had a copy of one of her books, Splendid Isolation, signed and managed to snag this pic with her! She really is a wonderful, sweet lady! If you ever get the chance to meet her or read one of her books don't hesitate! You'll be glad you did!

I'll be back writing reviews soon starting with Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen! I'll also be reviewing some more children's books in honor of summer break for the kids and kids at heart and some crime novels for the detective in all of you!

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle

       :D I want to tell you about a book that I read as a kid that I LOVED!!! IT has stayed at on my list of best books I have ever read! It’s called A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle!

Summary

            Meg and Charles’s father mysteriously disappeared while he was working on time-travel. They never knew what happened to him. When a stranger is brought to their door after being “blown off-course” he tells them that there really is such a thing as a “tesseract” or a wrinkle in time. Meg, Charles, and friend Calvin decide to search for the children’s father, but will they be able to find him? Can they fight and resist the forces of evil all along the way that work so hard to pull them off course? Find out in A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle!

Review

         This book was truly a wonderful book! I was young and very into checking out books to read from my school’s library when I read A Wrinkle in Time and it has stayed in my mind ever since! It is a great book for children! When my friends read it in school they all loved it as well. Parents will truly enjoy reading this book to their kids or feel very safe allowing their child to read it on their own. I give A Wrinkle in Time 5 bookmarks and strongly recommend it! In fact, I recently saw that you can pick up a copy at your local Target. I saw it on shelves! A Matter of Class- Mary Balogh

     I have a book for you today that sounds great but once you delve into its pages you may wish that you had left it on the shelf. The book is A Matter of Class by Mary Balogh.

Summary:

            A young man is from a rich family. The only problem is that they are “new money”. This means that the “old money” families do not really accept he and his father which bothers his father very much. A young woman is from one of these old money families and has recently had her reputation ruined. Seeing it as an opportunity, the young man’s father betrothes his son to the young lady. Both are resentful of the match, but not everything is as it seems with this young couple. As their story unfolds, something happens that neither family saw coming.

Review:

            This book had GREAT potential. The plot was wonderful and the final twist was a complete shock! Unfortunately, there are some things that cause me not to recommend this book as a read. First, there is a character in the book that we as the read hear some of his thoughts about a 12 year old girl that are extremely inappropriate. It’s very much like looking into the mind of a pedophile. And it’s not really necessary to the story. Second, there is a sex scene that is so graphic that it borders on pornography. I’m afraid that since the book is so short, these issues plus other suggestive events make the book not worth reading. I give it 0 bookmarks based on all the unnecessary scenes and statements that are made. I’m sorry to have to say that I do not recommend this book to ANYONE.

Night by Elie Wiesel

                Hello Bookworms! Today I have an amazing book that I want to tell you about. It is called Night and it is by a wonderful man named Mr. Elie Wiesel.

Summary:

            In this autobiographical telling of his life, Mr. Wiesel recounts the time he spent as a young Jewish boy in Auschwitz during the Holocaust. He tells of the horrors he and those around him experienced as it really happened. Mr. Wiesel has provided the world with an amazing inside look at what the Holocaust really was like from the point of view of one of the few who survived.

Review:

            Bookworms, I will start by saying that I give this book 5 bookmarks. I STRONGLY recommend that every adult read this book. It is the most amazing account of the Holocaust that I have ever read. So much so that I was more than willing to read it twice. I stand amazed at what Mr. Wiesel has been through and his willingness to tell anyone who will listen so that we will not repeat our mistakes. I do have to say that this book is not for children. It does tell the horrors that Mr. Wiesel and others went through in detail and children should not read such horrors until they are old enough to handle it with maturity. I would definitely recommend that every mature adult read this book. Mr. Wiesel’s book is in novel form, so it won’t be hard to be interested in what he has to say. This book is more than worth your time.

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

     I have a classic I want to review today! Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen!

Summary:

                The Dashwood women have recently lost their husband and father, Mr. Dashwood, and are now forced to move to a new home since Mr. Dashwood’s son, Mr. John Dashwood, and his wife, Fanny, are about to move into the house. However, before they move, the eldest daughter, Ms. Elinor Dashwood, forms an attatchment to Fanny’s brother, the sweet but somewhat bumbling, Mr. Edward Ferrars. Fanny makes it perfectly clear that Elinor is beneath Edward and therefore a match between them will not be suitable causing the Dashwood’s to make haste and move into a cottage near Barton Park that was given to the by Barton’s owner, their cousin, Sir John Middleton.  While at their new home, the second eldest daughter, Miss Maryanne Dashwood, meets a dashing, charming stranger named Mr. John Wiloughby. It would seem as though the ever romantic Maryanne has found her true love in Mr. Wiloughby, and to everyone else it seems as though Wiloughby feels the same. When the sudden news comes that Wilougby, after a long absence, is engaged to another woman, Maryannne is crushed. Losing the will to go on, Maryanne’s trials of love will soon become a matter of life and death and it will be put on Elinor’s shoudlers to bear up under  it all. What will become of Maryanne and Elinor? Will Maryanne ever recover from the heartbreak? Will Elinor and Edward remain divided forever?  Can Elinor bear up under the weight of caring for her sister’s heartbreak while still recovering from her own? Review:

                I can honestly say that I LOVED reading this book! The tale of the Dashwood women kept me riveted to my seat! In typical Jane Austen fashion, there are times when the descriptions  of people, places, and things can be a bit much but the plot lacks nothing! You will truly enjoy this book! I recommend it as a book to read for sure. I also give it 5 bookmarks!

                As with many classic books there are several movie versions, but the movies never keep all the details the same. The one that comes the closest that I have seen is the version from BBC Video (Featuring Dan Steven’s of Masterpiece Classic’s Downton Abbey as Edward Ferrars) that recently aired on PBS. One of the most popular versions and another personal favorite of mine is the version in which the screenplay was written by Emma Thompson (Who also played Elinor Dashwood in the movie). I would recommend watching either of those versions as they are both wonderful!
